Singer 4423 review: Is it the best sewing machine? post thumbnail image

Finding a new sewing machine for yourself or your business is incredibly important. You want a model that’s durable, dependable, and which can withstand a lot of work you’re doing with it.

While there are plenty of sewing machines to choose from, one of the most popular models out there is the Singer 4423. Many consider it to be one of the best heavy-duty sewing machines, but does it stand up to the expectations? Let’s find out!

What’s in the box?

The Singer 4423 is a heavy-duty machine for home use; it’s not an industrial machine, so that’s important to keep in mind. That being said, the unit does come packed with accessories and a variety of other things, as you will notice below:

• Naturally, you get the Singer 4423 sewing machine, with its pedal cord and foot pedal

• The package also has a gray dust cover and 4 presser feet

• They also added warranty info, a quick start guide, and other miscellaneous papers

• Lastly, the Singer 4423 package has an accessories case, which includes a lint brush, combo seam ripper, screwdriver, spool pin felt, spool caps, auxiliary spool pin, bobbins, needles, and a quilting guide.

Additionally, the Singer 4423 sewing machine is 15.5” x 6.25” x 12”. Additionally, it weighs 14.6 lbs, and the max speed is 1100 spm. It comes with a class 15 bobbin size, a max stitch length of 4 mm, and a width of 6 mm.

Key features for the Singer 4423

What’s very interesting about the Singer 4423 is the fact that it has 2 large dials on the front, but also 3 at the top. While beginners might be intimidated by it, the quick-start guide offers all the info, and generally, the sewing machine is very easy to use. They added an automated needle threader, along with great food pedal controls for up to 1100 stitches a minute, and a metal frame. Other worthwhile features include:

• The machine comes with 23 built-in stitches, and you can choose from 10 decorative stitches, a 1-step buttonhole, 6 other decorative stitches, and 6 basic ones. The stitch selector provided here worked seamlessly during our experience, and having so many stitches to choose from is very handy.

• You can adjust the stitch length and width. It helps move the needle position, while also adding more versatility to the projects at hand, something you should keep in mind.

• The needle positioner and tension adjuster allow you to place the needle wherever you want, and you can easily adjust the tension as well, depending on the project.

• Although the machine is on the heavy side at 17 pounds, we think it’s the ideal weight for something like this. It won’t fall off the table, but it’s still portable. While it doesn’t come with a hard case, it’s worth investing in one if you want to travel around with the unit.

• When you are removing the flatbed attachment, you get a free arm that allows you to hem jeans or sew smaller, circular items.

• The Singer 4423 has a great LED light that’s powerful. It helps a lot if you’re sewing in a room where the brightness levels are not ideal.

Setting up the machine

For the most part, setting up the Singer 4423 is rather easy. The instruction guide is very useful here, and there shouldn’t be any problems. Since the machine has an automatic needle threader, it does offer self-threading, and that eliminates a lot of potential challenges. We will say, when you press the lever, a small hook will draw the thread through the needle’s eye, and that part is very delicate. If you’re misusing it, that part can break very easily, although it is more durable when compared to former Singer models or Brother needle threaders.

Use cases for the Singer 4423

We all use the Singer 4423 in different ways, and everyone will try to adapt the unit to their own needs. That’s why we can share our experience when it comes to different types of uses for the Singer 4423, and how the machine performed.

• If you want to make buttonholes, there’s a buttonhole foot where you can easily add the button, and you can make a hole without any issues. It’s a rather seamless process, and it can save quite a bit of time.

• Quilting is possible with the Singer 4423, but it will need a feed foot or a walking foot, which have to be acquired separately. The machine has a quilt guide, however, which you should consult beforehand.

• Sewing denim or hemming jeans is actually very easy to do with the Singer 4423. We were able to sew up to 5 denim layers. The motor is said to be up to 60% stronger when compared to the regular sewing machine motors, and you can see that power when handling denim or thicker materials.

• We also worked with leather, and the machine was able to sew 3 pieces of tooling leather without any problems.

Is the machine safe?

The advertised 1100 stitches per minute sounds crazy, but you can get there. The machine has built-in safety features to help protect your hands. But in general, you want to stick with slower speeds to stay away from any issues. Sticking with 850 spm is a good idea, but if you have experience, you can increase that speed whenever you want. The heavier weight of the machine and its metal frame make 1100 spm possible, which is great.

Warranty

Singer is known for their 90/2/25 warranty. Basically, you have a 90-day warranty after purchase, where Singer will cover any repairs at their expense. Then, other things are covered for 2 years at your own expense. The machine head, however, has a warranty of 25 years.

Pricing

Generally, you can find the Singer 4423 at around $300, but it often goes on sale for $220-$250. You’re getting a very good value for money, since the product is durable, it can handle pretty much any sewing task, and the 1100 spm speed surpasses most expectations. Its pricing is similar to some of the alternatives like the Brother Juki F300, Brother XR3774, and so on.

Pros

• It’s very fast and it comes with lots of accessories

• Changing the presser foot pressure is very useful

• Top-load bobbin makes using it easier

• It can be used for sewing thick and thin fabrics

Cons

• The buttonhole foot is cheaply made

• The foot pedal can be very sensitive, which leads to mistakes at times

• Its steel plate is a smudge/fingerprint magnet

Should you buy the Singer 4423?

As a complete package, we think the Singer 4423 has a lot to offer. Its quality is great, the model is very durable, and the 1100 spm speed is amazing, certainly useful for experienced professionals. Yet despite that, it’s easy to use for newcomers, and it has an excellent feature set along with detailed user guidelines. If you’re looking for a great sewing machine that can help you with pretty much any project, one that’s affordable or durable, you can’t go wrong with the Singer 4423!
